Tough Love on Overeating

Time for some tough love.  If you are overweight you are overweight because you are overeating.  And if you are overeating, it’s for an emotional reason.  Now let me back up to the idea of overeating.  As soon as I said this, some of you were like “oh, she is finally going to tell us what diet to follow.”  If you have read this blog, you know I am anti diet because most diets are about restricting calories or restricting certain food groups like fats and carbohydrates in order to reduce caloric intake.  The only thing this kind of diet gives you is short term weight loss and a slower metabolism.  Your brain is so much smarter than the diet industry.  When you brain senses a reduction in calories it will reduce your energy expenditure.  You will have to eat fewer and fewer calories to lose the same amount of weight.  Not cool at all and oh if you don’t believe me, check out the data on the TV show The Biggest Loser.  

 Let’s change our thoughts from overeating to over fueling our bodies.    In other words, we are giving our body more energy than it needs and that results in storage of this excess energy as adipose or fat tissue.  Your body is doing just what it is designed to do.  When you are adequately fueling your body, your body will tell you when it has had enough.  So, by definition, when you are over fueling your body you are eating past physical hunger and you are eating for an emotional reason.  The caveat to this is that your body can’t give you the right signals if you are continuing to take in highly processed flour and sugar.  Get rid of that stuff and your natural hunger signals will return.  This is how we start to learn how to not overeat.  You might be screaming at me that you can’t give up your beloved flour and sugar.  I get that, I have truly been there. 

One way I like to think about my ability to give up flour and sugar is to think about my friends who have Celiac disease.  Now for those of you who don’t know, individuals with Celiac cannot process gluten which is a substance found in wheat.  If they ingest gluten, they experience a profound inflammatory response in their gut that can cause diarrhea, severe pain and even nutritional deficiencies from lack of absorption.  Let me tell you, this is not a fun disease.  These individuals absolutely can’t consume wheat or wheat flour.    Now if you suffered from this condition, I guarantee giving up flour would be simple.  You would do it to avoid pain and suffering.  Truthfully sugar and flour are causing an inflammatory response in your body but you just don’t feel the heart disease, diabetes and liver failure occurring.  But just because you can’t feel it, doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. 

Once you are tuned into your physical hunger, you can start to figure out why you are having emotional hunger.  This is truly the key to long term weight loss success.  Finding the reasons why you are eating when you are not hungry and then working on changing those thoughts that are driving the behavior is crucial.    This is not an easy process but we are here to help.  If you would like to figure out how to fuel your body correctly and to create a system to deal with emotional eating, give us a call today.  One more thought on diets.  The feelings of restriction and deprivation are real.  While feelings can’t hurt you, they are uncomfortable and guess what that can result in?  Yep, eating the very things that are keeping you from weight loss.
